WHAT WE DO

Four things off one bench, a week at a time.

Bespoke framing, all sorts

Photographs, prints, oils, embroideries, shirts, medals and memorabilia, framed to your specification. Wood or metal mouldings, never MDF. Ready in about a week.

Computerised mount cutting

Cut to the millimetre on the Wizard: single, double or multi-aperture. A mount holds the image off the glass and guards it from acid attack.

Glass and dry mounting

Clear, non-reflective etched, UV protection, anti-reflection, acrylic and mirror. Dry mounting bonds an image flat under the heated press, no wrinkles.

Local Penarth prints

Vilis is a Penarth photographer. His prints of Penarth Pier, the Esplanade and Penarth Head, with historical views and aerial shots from 1982 on, framed in-store.

OUR STORY · 1987 TO TODAY

1987. Vilis Kuksa, Penarth born and bred, opens the workshop at Victoria Bridge.

The rule from the start: wood or metal mouldings, never MDF, a mount that lifts the work off the glass. Vilis qualified as a Guild Commended Framer in 1997.

Beverley Kuksa-Roberts became a second GCF at the bench in 2012, and Galina Kuksa runs the front desk. Same shop, same Railway Terrace, thirty-eight years on.

MOUNTS, GLASS & CONSERVATION

How far to go is your call. We cut five levels.

A mount is not just a border. Cut on the Wizard to the millimetre, it lifts the image off the glass and guards it from acid attack. Single, double or multi-aperture, conservation board.

Glass options: clear, non-reflective etched, UV protection, anti-reflection, UV plus anti-reflection, acrylic and mirror. We match it to your piece.

FAQ

Questions we get at the counter.

Do you frame unusual things, medals, shirts, embroidery, memorabilia?

Yes. Photographs, prints, oils, embroideries, sports shirts, medals and memorabilia have all crossed the bench. Bring it in and we will work out how best to frame it.

What glass should I choose?

It depends on the piece and where it hangs. Clear suits most work. Non-reflective etched cuts glare, UV-protection slows fading in daylight, anti-reflection does both. We match it so you pay for what it needs.

How long does framing take?

About a week as a rule. If you have a deadline, a christening, an exhibition, a gift, tell us at drop-off and we will work to it.

Why are you closed on Wednesdays and over lunch?

We close all day Wednesday and one to two each day; those quiet hours are when the framing gets done. Open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday ten to six, and Saturday half-nine to half-five.

Do you sell prints of Penarth?

Yes. Vilis is a local photographer, so the shop carries his prints of Penarth Pier, the Esplanade and Penarth Head, plus historical views and aerial shots. Framed in-store while you choose mount and glass.
